Community Engagement

How companies in the built environment interact with the communities in which we work and live.

Building Stronger Connections with Communities

The Built Environment industry doesn’t work in isolation; it directly influences and impacts the communities where projects are built. In the U.S., companies are expected to engage with local communities, prioritizing their wellbeing and addressing potential project impacts through proactive communication and support.

Effective community engagement, through open consultation, responsive feedback, and project transparency, can help reduce disturbances and foster positive relationships with local residents. Stakeholders such as clients, local authorities, and the public increasingly expect companies to improve the wellbeing of communities affected by their projects. Programs like the U.S. Green Building Council’s LEED for Neighborhood Development offer frameworks that encourage community-friendly design and operational practices, allowing companies to demonstrate their commitment to responsible development.

Community engagement goes beyond donations or volunteer work; it involves measurable, impactful initiatives that address local needs. Companies often partner with community organizations to support various programs through volunteer hours, financial sponsorships, pro-bono services, or resource sharing.

For meaningful engagement, companies need to track and evaluate their contributions to understand and enhance the social impact they bring to communities. By measuring impacts and quantifying benefits, companies can demonstrate how their efforts are truly improving local quality of life, creating lasting value, and building trust in the communities they serve.
